gisburn auction marts AUGUST cogent pedigree dairy show & sale - 19 AUGUST 2010 Customers at Gisburn Auction Marts August Cogent Pedigree Sale were greeted by a full shippon of new calved and in calf cattle. Combined with the pedigree entry there were 60 newly calved cattle on offer. A consignment of new calved organic heifers from Mark Gornall of Pendleton were one of the highlights selling to £1920 to W Hesketh & Son and with 3 others over £1700 each they were very much admired. Unfortunately none of these cattle went to join other organic herds which reflects the lack of enthusiasm in the organic milk market. With increasing feed cost and the difficulty in obtaining a premium in the market it is going to be a tough winter for organic producers. Taking top price this month was Frankland Farms with a 2nd calver Picston Shaker cow selling to £2150 again to W Hesketh Farms. Champion went to a new calved heifer from David Wilson of Newton; she sold for £1900 to D Coulthurst of Longridge. Reserve champion was shown by Simon Thompson of Hothersall she was by Roylane Jordan and backed by a sound VG & Ex pedigree she sold for £1950 to Downham farmer David Walmsley.
In the in calf section new vendor T H Wensley & Son of Great Plumpton topped the sale at £1670 selling to A Outram Bury. A smart group of young heifers for James Wellock, Eshton, Skipton sold to £750 for bulling heifers and £600 for weaned calves.

In the cow class Frankland Farms took 1st and 2nd selling for £1920 and £2320 respectively. Both these cows were yielding over 40kg daily and were a superb example of modern dairy cows also selling to W Hesketh.
