Thursday 24 June 2010  Prime Sheep - Auctioneers Comment

This Thursday Gisburn saw a total entry of 554 prime sheep to include 466 lambs and 88 cast sheep.  Prime lambs were good to sell with an excellent average for the week of 174 pence or £73.00 per head.  A large audience of buyers ranging from smaller butchers to larger agents facilitated good markets for all lambs presented.  With a shortage of lambs presented across the board meant supply was tightened therefore demand and price lifted.  The cast ewe trade again was slightly better on the week again a shorter supply across the board meaning a better price being achieved with heavy lowland ewes topping at £80 per head and horned ewes topping at £64 per head.  Top sale price on the day was achieved by D & E Alderson for his Texel lambs totalling £83 per head or 193 pence per kilo.  Top price per kilo on the day was from Kevin Purtill for his Texel lambs achieving 213 pence per kilo or £79 per head.

Thursday 17 June 2010  Lambs for Charity

Gisburn Auction Market held its weekly market on Thursday 17 June but with a slight twist to its prime lamb sale.

It started with a local Yorkshire based firm called Towergate Insurance Limited who on the day were promoting their firm by holding a raffle to win a prime Texel gimmer lamb supplied by Gisburn Auction Mart Ltd.

The raffle was promptly drawn by local farmer Dorothy Doyle, Tosside and won by a West Yorkshire farmer and haulier Andrew Wareing from Bingley.  In the spirit of charity Andrew decided to donate his prize by putting the prime lamb back under the hammer and donating the proceeds to the West Yorkshire charity Manorlands Hospice. The lamb was purchased by local farmer Mr J Mellin at Long Preston and realising an excellent price of £106 which was later passed onto the nominated charity.

On the day a total of 469 lambs were presented for sale realising an average price of 161 pence per kilo and top priced lamb sold for £84.00.

Auctioneer Jonathan Turner commented that lambs on the day were harder to sell with increased numbers forward but still a good audience of buyers present.

20 may 2010 - gisburn auction marts May dairy show & sale of DAIRY CATTLE

- incorporating dispersal sale for R E METCALF & SON -

A good crowd of friends and customers turned out to support the dispersal for R E Metcalf & Son at Gisburn Auction Mart on Thursday 20th May.  This was an emotional day for Johnny Metcalf and his mother who at 80 years was still milking the cows every day.  The Metcalf’s restocked after foot and mouth but due to continuing poor milk prices they have now decided to concentrate on their holiday cottages and Bed & Breakfast business.   Their top price cow at £2050 sold to Messrs Berry at Hoober Farm Horton, she was an April calver giving 48kgs.  Next top price giving a massive 52kg sold at 2000gns to Messrs. Holliday of Silloth Cumbria.  These cattle had been well farmed and looked very impressive and with exceptionally low cell counts they sold well.

In the monthly Cogent sponsored pedigree sale an entry of 17 met a more cautious trade than of late.  The Champion heifer came from Gordon Beresford of Hellifield she was by Cattonhall Lucky Charm and out of the Cheeky family she sold to F Talbot & Son Ribchester for £2050.  Reserve was from Alan Taylor of Woodplumpton and was by Comestar Stormatic and backed by two generations of VG and EX, she sold for £1840 to AF Townend, Southfield, Burnley.  Top Pedigree cow came from G Airey  of Thornley she sold to Hague Speak of Eccleston for £1780.  In the cull cow auction prices held firm and many farmers decided to invest their proceeds in fresh milk cows on the same day.

Gisburn Machinery SaleSaturday 10 April 2010

Despite the fact that there were two other sales on the same day a good crowd of regular sale goers enjoyed the warmest sunshine of the year at Gisburn Auction Marts.

As always there was an interesting line up of lots with a 1963 MF35 causing much interest early in the sale.  This little tractor was a good example and sold without VAT to attract a £1900.00bid from local MF expert Ted Braithwaite.  This was soon followed by a Portequip mobile cattle handling system which was a must for any beef farmer the hammer fell to Slaidburn farmers T Robinson & Son for £3,100.00  Cattle trailers of every shape and size met a mixed trade but some vendors decided to take the bids on offer and a I/W DP120 G 2004 model sold just on £2000.00.  Older trailers sold either side of the £1000.00 mark.  Fencing equipment sold well as this is traditionally the time of year when sheep and lambs escape to neighbouring fields.  Just to prove that we can sell anything at GAM a Diahatsu 1.5 hatchback with a new MOT on the morning of the sale sold for a respectable £550.00.  Also in the sale was a much admired vintage caravan which sold to local farmer George Simpson of Bolton by Bowland which would have made a respectable and luxury shepherds hut.

Next sale is on Saturday 5 June.  Everyone welcome.

         Cattle which can be shown to have spent their whole lives in low incidence areas;

TUESDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2010 - GREAT SPRING MACHINERY SALE

Now in its 2nd year Gisburn’s Great Spring Machinery sale seems to be well and truly established as a prime venue for customers from UK and Ireland.  With over 200 lots of mainly ex farm machinery on offer including 2 small dispersals the crowd enjoyed a good days trading.

Auctioneers Jonathan Turner and Rachel Capstick moved quickly through the rows of machinery with a good clearance on most items.  Tractors were in short supply but as always turned up a few surprises.  A 1960 International B275 with loader made £1760 selling to local collector Gary Entwistle.  This tractor was a perfect example of a barn stored tractor with original badges and paintwork and will be kept untouched by Mr Entwistle.  Also selling well was a Case Skid Steer in G.W.O. from a local farmer selling at £2,150.

Top seller of the day was a 1600 West Dual Spreader looking very fresh and ready to go it topped at £8,000 to local farmer Jimmy Baines.  Irish Buyers enjoyed the chance to pick up a few items on route to York’s Wednesday sale, they showed a keen interest in the cattle trailers and with 14 on offer everyone found a model to suit.  Prices were from £2,250 for a mint TA510G 12' to £450 for a 25yr old Bateson 10' model.  There was a strong entry of sheep handling equipment with a Tony Binns system selling at £900 and sheep turnover crate at £440, reflecting the price of galvanised equipment.
