With many farmers taking the chance to get some fieldwork done.  There was only a small crowd of buyers at the Dugdales Nutrition Dairy Show, but trade continued to amaze everyone.  Craven farmer Jeremy Taylor topped the sale with a superb pedigree heifer selling to DJ Wallbank, Higher Walton, Preston for £2400 who also took another Smellow’s heifer at £2250.  Second prize went to Eric Armer, Catforth, Preston and sold to Chris Harrison, Elslack, Skipton for £2300.  Two superb in calf heifers due to the Aberdeen Angus from J & P A Baldwin & Sons, Brindle, Chorley they sold for £2120 and £200 to Tom Green, Wigan.  H & F Eccles & Son, Burnley sold in calf heifers to £1500 and heifer calves mad £380.  Fred Spurgeon, dairy auctioneer, said Newly calved dairy cattle, are in huge demand and many more could have been sold.”

CAST SHEEP WERE IN HUGE DEMAND ON MONDAY 30 JANUARY AT GISBURN AUCTION MARTS. THE TOP PRICE OF THE DAY WAS £171 FROM RICHARD & MARK IRELAND, WHALLEY WITH THEIR TEXEL EWES SELLING FOR £171 AND £170 PER HEAD.

TOPPING THE CAST TUP TRADE WAS ALAN LODGE, MALHAM MOOR, SETTLE WITH A TEXEL RAM AT £131.

JONATHAN TURNER, AUCTIONEER SAID “FIERCE BIDDING FOR SOME TOP QUALITY CAST EWES FROM MANY DIFFERENT VENDORS RESULTED IN £171 TOP PRICE. SWALE AND HORNED EWES ALSO RECEIVING A TOP TRADE AT £68 AVERAGE. HOGGS NOW STARTING TO STRENGTHEN WITH NUMBERS ACROSS THE MARKETS LESSENING. MANY SPEC HOGGS AVERAGING BETWEEN 205P/KAND 220P/K. HEAVY HOGGS NOW SEEING MORE INTEREST AND EASIER TO SELL.

What a trade!  Alan Bowker, Cowling topped the calf market this week with a batch of five British Blue bull calves at £502 and heifers at £445.  Thirty blue bull out of 190  calves forward, averaged £356 whilst blue heifers averaged £287 other continental breeds also met a solid trade with plenty of bulls in the £300-£350 bracket and heifers around the £280 mark.  A the other end of the scale black and whites were also in demand all day so forward selling to average £105.

Pedigree new calved heifers sold to £2420 at Gisburn’s Pedigree sale on Thursday.  Regular vendor WA & A Booth, Feizor, Austwick took the champion rosette with a Durham Sam daughter giving 35kgs.  She was praised by judge Simon Thompson, Ribchester, Preston for the quality of her udder and body capacity and sold to NW & J M Coulthurst, Goosnargh, Preston for £2400.  Reserve Champion came from Robert Smith, Samlesbury, Preston she was by Langs–Twin-B-Dondee and sold for top price of £2,420 to T Pickup, Entwistle, Bolton.  Trade continued at a strong price with 14 of the 26 heifers on offer making £2,000 or more.  Regular winner J & M Singleton & Sons, Goosnargh, Preston missed out on the prizes but topped at £2,300 to F Talbot & Co, Ribchester, Preston and £2,250 to livestock agent A GreenhalghGarstang farmers W Cornthwaite sold their Bolivia Allen heifer to J & MM Walmsley & Son, Worston, Clitheroe  for £2200.

Two young in-calf cows for SA & C Thompson, made £2,050 and £2,020 both in-calf for end of January to the Simmental.  In the regular milkers Frankland Farms took top price of £1,960 to JT & F Thornber, Sawley, Clitheroe.  Heifer calves made to £420.00
